What is Clinical Psychology ?

We often come across to William Wundt in our psychology text book. Most of the time he is known as the founder of the first laboratory for psychological research (1879), not only that he was the first to call himself a Psychologist. Someone who explore the nature of religious belief, identify mental disorders, abnormal behavior, and find damage parts of the brain.
As time evolve this practical knowledge of psychology became prominent when animal and human perceptions were applied in the education field. Lightner Witmer was the first to introduce psychological clinic (1896). This clinic grew and practice their application to the treatment to their various mental health disorders.

We are all aware that clinic means sick patient being treated by a physician. Therefore, in the literal sense, Clinical Psychology means treating sick patients. In the broader common-sense, clinical psychology not only providing treatment for person with mental disorder but involves teaching and researching about behavior.

Clinical Psychology is strongly influenced by the treatment principles of psychoanalysis which place more emphasis on unconscious mind functioning.
The degree connected with clinical psychology are:
  • Traditional Ph.D (Doctor of Philosophy) - involves training in both clinical treatment & research
  • New Psy.D. (Doctor of Psychology) - involves clinical training & minimize training in research
Usually person who receive license are able to provide clinical services counter to teaching or conducting research.
  • Those with Doctrates in clinical psychology usually becomes Psychologist.
  • Those with Master's Degree in clinical psychology usually become licensed as Marriage and Family Therapist.

Addiction

Are habits and addictions the same thing? Well, for one they both consist of repetitive behaviors.

A habit is a choice. One can choose to stop the habit successfully if one wants to. On the other hand, an addiction involves psychological components where a person is unable to control his/her behavior without help because of his/her mental and/or physical condition. However, a habit may turn into an addiction.

As such, it is important to know how to identify the symptoms and causes of an addiction. Thus, CPIC's next general meeting. Our theme this time round is addiction. Here are they details of the talk:

Date: 15 May 2013 (Wednesday)
Time: 12pm-2pm
Venue: LH 3.5, Wisma HELP
Theme: Addiction

So if you are free or interested, do drop by. We'll love to see you :)

Upcoming Field Trip! *Excites* =D

Hey there,

Guess what's coming up this March?...*drum roll*.... Well CPIC is organizing a trip to the Malaysian Mental Health Association (MMHA). If you don't know who or what MMHA is, let me give you an introduction:

MMHA was founded by a group of professionals from University Malaya Medical Centre (University Hospital) who wanted to provide a place where the recovered and recovering can receive help and support. MMHA provides services both for their clients as well as their family members. Some of the programmes they run are the Family-to-Family Educational Programme where family members train other family members in caring for the mentally ill. They also run a rehabilitation programme which involves having activities such as cooking, dancing and art and craft aimed at keeping them occupied as well to develop living skills. The MMHA also has adopted a new programme called the Illness Management and Recovery (IMR) programme where clients are taught and helped in managing and copibng with their illness. Furthermore, MMHA also runs a Charity Shop Project and Day Care Centre.

As such, CPIC will be bringing you to MMHA this March. You'll be able to meet these people who have suffered from mental illnesses up close and be able to understand what they have and are going through.
